Billy's Best RSS (Really Short Songs)

Inspired by Bob's super-fun "Really Short Song" musings, I jumped into my iTunes to discover over 200 songs that clocked in under 150 seconds. Even after dumping the garbage, I still had 140 completely legitimate pop songs that fit the requirements. So for fun, I've separated this into two separate Top 14 lists (it's the closest I could get to 14.9 without going over).

The first is for classic songs by the early masters of the RSS, but those ain't linked. That's just to reveal something of what exists on my iTunes in the "Classics" category. The second list, the ones available for your listening pleasure, had two rules: (1) Nothing pre-1980; and (2) Nothing that to my knowledge cracked the charts.

I'm still stunned that this was a difficult challenge. Unlike Bob, I never really realized how many great songs hold to that time window. (The second picture is of Martin Short singing. It was the third thing that came up by Googling images under "short songs.")

  1. We Will Rock You - Queen
  2. Yesterday - The Beatles
  3. Son of a Preacher Man - Dusty Springfield
  4. Everyday People - Sly & the Family Stone
  5. Rich Girl - Hall & Oates
  6. Blister in the Sun - Violent Femmes
  7. This Song Has No Title - Elton John
  8. Tutti Frutti - Little Richard
  9. Respect - Aretha Franklin
  10. Eleanor Rigby - The Beatles
  11. Subterranean Homesick Blues - Bob Dylan
  12. Why Don't We Do It in the Road - The Beatles
  13. Happy Jack - The Who
  14. Mercedez Benz - Janis Joplin
(Doesn't include songs I previously included in blogs)
  1. Sweet Sweet - Smashing Pumpkins
  2. Wave of Mutilation - The Pixies
  3. Whole Lotta Trouble - Cracker
  4. Walkaways - Counting Crows
  5. Dance Music - The Mountain Goats*
  6. Even Here We Are - Paul Westerburg
  7. Style - Lemonheads
  8. Yours and Mine - Fountains of Wayne
  9. Our Retired Explorer - The Weakerthans
  10. Flaming Red - Patty Griffin
  11. Dawn Can't Decide - Lemonheads
  12. Knock-Down Drag-Out - Weezer
  13. Miracle Drug - A.C. Newman*
  14. How Do You? - Radiohead
* - Couldn't quite get 'em converted from that evil Apple encryption format soon enough... so blame Apple. And then go out and buy some mp3 files (instead of iTunes' protected m4a files) at!
